The maze of alleys and byways with sunlight streaming through the slats above creates a mysterious enclave of sharp angles, geometric forms, and shadows masking colors.
In Tangiers people go up to their roofs to relax and enjoy the cool breeze that comes after the sunset. I was sitting with a group of people when suddenly a very small man, perhaps only four feet tall, wearing a top hat and a threadbare tuxedo came onto the roof.
He came towards us calling out “Je suis un fou. Give me some money and I will make a fool of myself.” We gave him a couple of coins and he proceeded to roll around on the roof spouting gibberish and quacking like a duck. We certainly felt that this little exhibition had enhanced the kif we were smoking.
